Veteran Tax Benefit walk-in hours

If you have a 100% service-connected disability, you may qualify for the Property Tax Benefit for Disabled Veterans in addition to the standard reduction program.

Need help with documentation? The Veterans Services Office is hosting walk-in hours to assist you:

ISU Pond Student Union Building, Room #307
Every Tuesday (Now – April 7)
8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Note: If you haven’t moved residences since your last application, you do not need to reapply!

Welcome to Bannock County Veteran Services where we proudly serve veterans and their dependents past, present, and future.  Our office is located on ISU’s Campus at the Student Union Building on the 3rd floor inside of the Veteran Student Service Center.  Parking is free in the designated “Bannock County Veteran Services” parking spots located in the small parking lot across from Davis Field and is accessible from Humbolt Street.  Handicapped parking is located at the front of the building.

We assist veterans and their dependents applying for benefits they’ve earned while linking them to other services and organizations that will support them locally where they live.

This office assists local Veteran Service Organizations (VSO).  We act as a liaison between their membership and other community organizations in support of their mission.

The County Veteran Service Officer (CVSO) works under the accreditations of the Office of Veterans Advocacy, State Veteran Service Officers (SVSO) to process claims and advocate for veterans and their dependents.

The Department of Veterans Affairs has a large presence in Bannock County.  The CVSO will advocate for you so you do not have to do it alone.

We are staffed with a full time Coordinator/CVSO and a full time Assistant.  We employ students who are using VA Education Benefits as Outreach Specialists to assist us with meeting your individual needs.

Melissa Hartman
Service Officer

We recognize that not everyone is able to travel to our office to recieve help. The Bannock County Veteran Services Office hosts monthly outreach opportunities for people who live in different parts of Bannock County.

These times are available for walk-in meetings.

Property Tax Benefit for Disabled Veterans

You might qualify for this program if you’re an Idaho resident, homeowner, and qualified veteran with a 100% service-connected disability. The program could reduce the property taxes on your home and up to one acre of land by as much as $1,500.

Once granted to a qualifying veteran, a surviving spouse can use this benefit. However, the benefit isn’t transferable to a new property after the death of the veteran.

Note: This program won’t reduce solid waste, irrigation, or other fees that government entities charge.

Read more about the program:
Property Tax Benefit for Veterans with a 100% Service-Connected Disability

Who qualifies

The Disabled Veterans benefit doesn’t have an income limit.

You might qualify for this program in 2026 if both of these apply:

  • You’re recognized as a veteran with a 100% service-connected disability or receive 100% compensation due to individual unemployability by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs as of January 1, 2026.
  • You owned and lived in a home in Idaho that was your primary residence before April 15, 2026.
    • The property must have a current homeowner’s exemption.
    • The home can be a mobile home.

You could qualify if you live in a care facility or nursing home in 2026 or lived in one in 2025. Contact your county assessor’s office for information.

How to apply

You must apply and qualify for this program every year. You must apply between January 1 and April 15, 2026, for a reduction to 2026 property taxes.

If your disability is permanent and total, you don’t need to reapply each year. The benefit will renew automatically.

If your application’s approved, your benefit will appear on your December 2026 property tax bill.

Before you begin: Get a current letter from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs confirming your 100% service-connected disability rating or your 100% compensation due to individual unemployability as of January 1, 2026.

** The Bannock County Veterans Services Office can help you obtain this letter! We are hosting walk-in clinics from Jan. 14-April 8 to help gather this information. Click here for more information.
